A to Z Bookish Survey

27 Aug

Another post, another meme. I recently stumbled upon this bookish alphabet survey on Books, Tea & Me and thought it would be fun to fill out.

Author you’ve read the most books from:

A local German author whom none of you will even have heard of. He writes crime novels set in my city and he publishes one per year these days so I have quite the collection by now.

Best Sequel Ever:

I like reading series so I’ve actually read a number of good sequels. Number 1 for me is probably ‘Lost in a Good Book’ by Jasper Fforde, followed closely by ‘The Restaurant at the End of the Universe’ by Douglas Adams.

Currently Reading:

‘Looking for Alaska’ by John Green and ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Drink of Choice While Reading:

A lot of the times I read in bed so I don’t drink anything or maybe water.

E-reader or Physical Book?

I want to buy an e-reader but I don’t see the e-books as cheap enough considering that I don’t get a physical copy of the book to carry around with me. I get that e-readers can be really handy, especially when you read and travel a lot but I haven’t made the jump yet.

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School:

Gosh, I don’t know. Hermione or Ginny probably, they would have been on my wish list at least.

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:

‘Alexander’ and ‘Alexander in Asia’ by Gisbert Haefs. My uncle gave me the book a long time ago and when I finally decided to read them it was very interesting. It’s a historical novel about Alexander the Great and I now know a lot more than I knew before I read that book.

Hidden Gem Book:

I don’t have any great picks that nobody has heard of bla bla bla. If you want to gain insight into why someone becomes anorexic and cannot leave that sort of thinking, go read ‘Unbearable Lightness’ by Portia de Rossi.

Important Moment in your Reading Life:

I don’t think there is one important moment in my reading life. Sorry.

Just Finished:

 ‘Whitethorn Woods’ by Maeve Binchy.

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

I’m really not into vampires, also Fifty Shades and all his little crappy friends. Not because I dismiss erotica but this is nothing worth my time.

Longest Book You’ve Read:

See G I guess.

Major book hangover because of:

Not that I remember.

Number of Bookcases You Own:

Four-ish. I blogged about that before.

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:

‘Leaving Unknown’ by Kerry Reichs and also most of the Harry Potter books.

Preferred Place To Read:

My bed, the couch, on the balcony…

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you’ve read:

Reading Regret:

Probably the Twilight saga, especially the last one of them. Ugh.

Series You Started And Need To Finish(all books are out in series):

The Sherlock Holmes canon. I started strong with the novels but the case studies are a bit dull in my opinion.

Three of your All-Time Favorite Books:

‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen
‘The Eyre Affair’ by Jasper Fforde
‘Leaving Unknown’ by Kerry Reichs

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

Kerry Reichs, Harry Potter and John Green.

Very Excited For This Release More Than All The Others:

Not currently excited for any new release because I have no idea what’s coming out. I saw that ‘A Casual Vacancy’ is now out in paperback so I’m kind of excited about that one.

Worst Bookish Habit:

I don’t like it when the backs of books get rips or whatever you call it. You know, when you bend them too far. I get crazy over that. My books need to look pretty. I also solely use pencils to mark stuff in my books.

X Marks The Spot: Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book:

 ‘Dubliners’ by James Joyce

Your latest book purchase:

‘Looking for Alaska’, ‘Paper Towns’ and ‘An Abundance of Katherines’ all by John Green.

ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late):

‘Looking for Alaska’ but more so because I took a nap and couldn’t fall asleep so I read a long time. Also, because it’s really good.

Liebster Blog Award

15 Dec

Here comes award post number two. Jacqui gave me the Liebster Blog Award which is very cool because unlike a lot of other bloggers, this one speaks my language :)) ‘Liebster’ is a term of endearment in German, for those of you that didn’t know yet.

11 Questions from Jacqui:

1. Why did you start blogging?

Because I read about a character in a book that was blogging and wanted to try it for myself.

2. What do you do in your spare time?

Watch all my shows, surf the web, read, hang out with family and friends or go to some rehearsal.

3. Your stangest dream?

That I lived across the street from a serial killer called ‘The Butcher’ but I was also living in the same building as him (my subconscious doesn’t do consistency) and saw how he murdered someone. I think that counts as my strangest dream.

4. Is there somewhere you’d rather be right now?

Nope, not right now.

5. What’s the first thing you think of in the morning?

How I wish I could go back to sleep.

6. Who did you talk to last?

My granny :)

7. How did you decide to start blogging?

Umm, see question #1?!

8. Favourite holiday?

Christmas. Cause I get to spend it with family and there are presents.

9. Favourite place away from home?

Close to an ocean or a big lake. Also, Växjö in Sweden.

10. What is your most prized possession?

My 50l trekking back-pack. I can’t wait to travel again.

11. What’s on the top of your Christmas Wishlist.

I don’t really do wish lists. The only material thing I wanted was a Blu-Ray player which I got for my birthday and christmas together already. Other than that, I only have wishes money cannot buy.

My 11 questions:

1. How will you celebrate Christmas, if you celebrate that is?
2. What is your favourite dish?
3. Have you ever made a snow angel?
4. Can you juggle? Have you ever tried it?
5. If you could swap your blog with another one for a day, whose would it be and why?
6. Are you a procrastinator? Probably, since you’re a blogger…so what is your favourite way to procrastinate?
7. What is your favourite season?
8. What do you think is the best thing about yourself?
9. If you could pack your bags right now, where would you like to travel to?
10. What do you wish 2013 to be like?
11. Are you as happy that these 11 questions are over as I am? Because it is hard to come up with decent questions, at least for me.

And finally, the nominees:

Betwixt an Between (I know you already got this one, but you’re still one of my favourites)

I think that’s it. If you already got this one and I nominated you again, well, I’m sorry but I’m not sorry because I love your blogs. Also, I feel like I’m always naming the same blogs, I guess I am a person of habit.

___________

I was fortunate enough to get this award again from The Little Butch That Could so I’m just going to add her questions on this old post.

1. What is your favorite smell?

– Probably freshly baked cake or cookies.

2. Who is the most influential person of your life?

– My lovely Grandma, who today forced me to eat ice cream. Se loves me way too much and I can only hope I’ll live up to her expectations.

3. If you could invite 3 living people to dinner, who would they be and why?

– Sasha Alexander because she is damn pretty and also funny. A.L. cause she is my oldest fan. And Tina Fey, she is hilarious and I love what she does.

4. What’s your favorite childhood memory?

– Playing games with my Granny.

5. What was your first paying job and what did you learn from it?

– The first job I was paid for was sorting paperwork and doing basic office stuff at my Mom’s company. Well, it was not her own company but she worked there. Not sure if I learned anything specific from it.

6. If you are familiar with public transportation and you are lucky enough to hop on an almost empty bus, where do you sit and why?

– I’d sit in the middle, close to the middle door, most likely bow side. I don’t like sitting in the back but I choose the position that gets me as far away from people I don’t know as possible.

7. Cat person, dog person or neither one and why?

– Dog person all the way. I don’t get what is so great about cats. Seriously! I don’t.

8. (Borrowed from James Lipton of “Inside the Actor’s Studio”) If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

– I hope this settles your questions, I do exist ;-) But I don’t mind you just didn’t trust the Bible blindly. I actually like that about you, not following for following’s sake. I hope this place lives up to your expectations though. And yo, I don’t have anything against gays!

9. What word or phrase do you use too often?

– This changes a lot. At the moment I feel that I overuse ‘however’.

10. What is the title of the last book you read?

– Currently I’m reading “Whispers Underground” and I’m almost finished.

11. What is your favorite dessert?

– I’m a dessert person, it’s the best thing about every meal. I like cake and ice cream and basically you can serve me a lot of different desserts, I won’t complain. I can’t name ONE, but cheesecake is on top of the list.

Another Day, Another Game

11 Aug

People, people, gather around cause I’ve been tagged again. It’s been a while and it’s easier than coming up with something witty and interesting on my own. So, today I will be answering the 11 questions posted by 2CagedBirds.

The Rules, ’cause everything has rules and I’m a follower, go like this:

1.  You must post the rules.
2.  Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post.
3.  Create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.
4.  Tag eleven people with a link to your post.
5.  Let them know they’ve been tagged.

Now onto the questions…

1.  Who was your first crush, and what was so special about him/her?

I’m not entirely sure if he was my first crush but I cannot remember anyone else and I always felt very strongly about him, from the moment we met in school. I still thank my german lit teacher for seating him next to me. We never were a real couple but he turned out to become my best friend which is so much better since it would  never have worked out between the two of us.

2.  What “guilty pleasure” do you have?  I want the one you’d be embarrassed to admit to your friends.

I don’t know what to answer. There aren’t a lot of things I like to do but am ashamed of. After looking up ‘guilty pleasure‘ on Wikipedia I am not smarter. Maybe the 3 days which I ate a bag of potato chips each. 3 bags in 3 days…I know it’s not healthy and the calories and all but they just taste so good. But am I embarrassed to admit this? No!

3.  What is one thing you suck at that you wish you could do perfectly?

Grammar and punctuation. I really suck at it. And if I could be less lazy and more productive it would be a nice change as well.

4.  Who is your hero?

Hero is maybe an odd word for it but I’m going with my grandma on this one. I was partially raised by her cause I spent every day my mom was at work at her place. She helped me with my homework, drove me to and from tennis, school and track. She taught me a lot about valuing money. I was not always happy with her butting her nose into my life and she as well as mom used to play me against each other, which I hated but other than that she amazes me because she is so strong. My grandpa got sick very early and died even before I got into school so she’s been on her own for nearly 20 years now. And even in her late 70s, she still doesn’t get to rest because she has to help me take care of her sick child and my mother. I know it is so hard on her which breaks my heart.

5.  What is one unexpected thing you find sexy about another person?

Um, no clue?!!! Does it need to be one thing on one special person or just in general? But as you’re awaiting an answer, I’ll be going with … curly long hair…I know this one girl, her hair just looks so nice. It’s curly like my own but longer and… yes, I think shiny wavy hair is sexy. Shut up!

6.  If you were stuck watching 3 movies for the rest of your life, what would they be?

First of all, let me tell you I’m actually more of a series kinda girl. I enjoy watching movies but they don’t come close to my passion for Bones, Gilmore Girls, The West Wing, 30 Rock and so on. If I had to go with the movies though I would choose the Harry Potter Saga, the old Star Wars Trilogy and Casablanca. I know I’m cheating on this but I can’t help myself.

7.  What is your favorite book?

Again with the choosing thing. This is really hard for a book-lover like myself!! Anyways, I’m going with ‘Leaving Unknown’ by Kerry Reichs (The Good Luck Girl in the UK) because I won’t mind reading it over and over again. A close runner up for that top spot would be ‘The Monsters of Templeton’ by Lauren Groff. I love it. Lauren also wrote a nice volume of short stories, which coming from me, is a HUGE compliment since I’m not too into short stories.

8.  Biggest pet peeve?

I have a lot of them but maybe matching clothes like a tracksuit is one top candidate. But there is a lot more where that came from, like people that think speed limits do not apply to them, people who drive like they’re asleep, students who ask questions about stuff the teacher or prof just answered a minute ago…do I need to go on?!

9.  Chocolate chip-cookies:  nuts or no nuts?

Definitely no nuts. I dislike nuts, strongly dislike them. There is one sort of candy in Germany and I love it but it has a whole hazelnut in the middle which I personally find disgusting. So what does little Miss Upton do? She eats the pieces of candy around the nut and places the nut back into the wrapper it came from. It’s a bit disgusting, I admit to that but why do they need to put a nut inside in the first place? This is really not my fault. Then again, I eat peanuts…I guess it depends on the context and the kind of nut. #crazy

10.  What was your favorite childhood toy?

I loved my doll Charlotte which I nicknamed Scha-Scha. And then I had a backpack full of detective stuff, like brushes, evidence bags, a magnifying glass, survival handbook, swiss army knife…The backpack itself was ugly cause it was pink…but I loved running around, pretending to investigate stuff.

11.  What’s one thing you wish everyone knew about you?

Probably that I’m gay because it would keep me from having to tell each and every one of the people I know sooner or later. Well, I don’t really plan on doing so but if I could send out an instant mental message to everyone and let them know it would be nice I guess.

Oh boy, here I thought answering the questions was the hard part but now I have to come up with 11 questions on my own? Phew.

1. What’s the place or country you would want to visit the most if you could just pack your bags and go?
2. What do a lot of people assume about you which is not true at all?
3. What is your favourite number?
4. Do you use hand sanitisers when they are provided?
5. What was the first concert you ever went to see?
6. Calling or texting/IMing?
7. What is your favourite TV show?
8. How old were you when you moved away from your parent(s)?
9. What is your pen of choice?
10. Your best childhood memory?
11. What would be your dream profession if your not already working it?

I won’t be tagging 11 people but here are my choices anyway: Addie from Betwixt and Between, This Labyrinth I Roam for purely selfish reasons ’cause I want her to post again :D, Charleen, NoviaHoneyImALesbian and Lauren at thoughtsonmybookshelf. Feel free to answer these questions even if I haven’t tagged you :)

An Alphabet Post

27 Jul

I saw this one on A Quick Sucsession of Busy Nothings and thought it was a neat idea to waste some time.

A – Age: 24

B – Bed Size: Um, a single bed I got when I was 12.

C – Chore you hate: Gardening, it’s such a waste of time in my opinion.

D – Dogs: Oh yes, but not those little things that bark at everything. A real sized dog please!!

E – Essential to start your day: Checking my mails before taking a shower.

F – Favourite colour: GREEN!

G – Gold or Silver: Definitely silver. Gold makes me feel tacky, not sure why…

H – Height: 172 cm

I – Instruments you play: None, except 4 chords on the guitar but that hardly counts.

J – Job title: Professional student with a lack of perspective.

K – Kids: Yes, someday. I actually want three, because one hates you or dies, one moves out and then you have one left to take care of you when you’re old and sick. But this would mean actually giving birth to 3 children which is probably more than I can take.

L – Live: Germany

M – Mum’s name: Ingeborg

N – Nickname: Sissi (one friend calls me that and she is Franz), Muckel (which my mother nicknamed me as a baby) and  other than that? – Nothing

O – Overnight hospital stay: When I was born, then twice in 2003, the first time for getting my hip fixed and the second time right before Christmas to get the screws out of my bone.

Yes, I actually asked for my screws and metal back.

P – Pet peeve: Idiots, idiotic people with stupid questions and crazy drivers…

Q – Quote from a book or movie: “In life, perfect pitch is the ability to know someone from inside out, even better maybe than she knows herself.” [Sing you Home, Jodi Picoult] Couldn’t come up with something better.

R – Righty/lefty: Righty although I always start with my left hand when I juggle.

S – Siblings: Sadly I am an only child :(

T – Time you wake up: Differs, it was 7:15 this morning

U – Underwear: Colourful like everything else I’m wearing

V – Veggies you dislike: I know this isn’t one veggie but salads as a whole because of vinegar and mayonnaise. I could live happily without mushrooms but I don’t hate them. Beetroot!!!

W – What makes you late: My mom.

X – X-rays you’ve had: Many on my hips, especially the left side, my left arm because I broke it twice, several teeth, my whole mouth because of wisdom teeth, some fingers, my feet. I think that’s it.

Y – Yummy food you make: Not the best chef under the sun but I think that everything I cook is delicious :D Does baking count? – Nevermind.

Z – Zoo animal: Elephant, it’s my favorite animal. It’s so big and grey and wonderful. I wish I had a real one.
